Welcome to the Armed Forces Veterans Homes Foundation
building nursing excellence for disabled veterans
All Americans want our troops back home safely from Iraq and Afghanistan soon. But we know
that the War on Terrorism will not suddenly end. Unlike other wars, this conflict will
continue-on indefinitely, requiring our country to be ever-vigilant. As a result, military
casualties will continue - and too many of the veterans being welcomed home every day will
be grievously wounded.
According to Pentagon statistics, up to 360,000 troops serving in the War on Terrorism
have suffered traumatic brain injury (TBI), the severity of which ranges from mild to severe.
An estimated 54,000 of these veterans will require medical specialists for the foreseeable
future. Veterans suffering from severe TBI will require long term nursing care for the
remainder of their lives.
Veteran long term nursing care is now facing unprecedented challenges. Meeting the needs
of veterans wounded in the War on Terrorism will require a healthcare system with redefined
medical and rehabilitation capabilities. The VA (US Department of Veterans Affairs) has
moved quickly to meet these needs. While much has been accomplished, much remains to be
done.
America's State Veteran Home system is proud to be part of the answer to the long term
nursing care needs of America's veterans. We originated long term care for veterans during
the Civil War and then entered into a nursing partnership with the VA twenty-five years
later.
The Armed Forces Veterans Homes Foundation improves the quality of life for disabled veterans
residing in State Veterans Homes and promotes nursing excellence through staff training
and professional development.
State Veterans Homes are located in 137 communities across the nation, providing care to
32,000 disabled veterans. We now meet over half of the VA's long term care need and will
open sixteen more Homes in the next two years.
The Foundation is in partnership with the National Association for State Veterans Homes
and operates a joint office in the headquarters building of the Air Force Sergeants Association,
our founder. Together, we are "Caring for America's Heroes," generation after generation.
