Conventional wisdom is that video games are for kids.
But soon after the Nintendo Corporation released its "Wii," the world began
to realize that virtual reality engineering had immense relevance to healthcare facilities
as well. Residents, who could not go to sporting events, could suddenly participate
in sporting events that would come to them. Nintendo Wii has been shown to be of
immense benefit to the physical therapy and rehabilitation of nursing–care
patients.
At State Veterans Homes, residents can participate in an electronic game of bowling,
tennis, golf – or in a round of boxing – with the mere flip of a switch.
Such activities are closely monitored by nursing staff to ensure that physical activities
are consistent with each resident’s health care plan requirements.
The Veterans Homes Foundation is working with the Nintendo Corporation in acquiring
Nintendo Wii’s for the State Veterans Home system. As soon as Wii’s arrive
at the Foundation office, they are shipped to the Homes. We have found that Wii’s
are so popular that Home administrators are willing to share best–practices
tips with one another. The Foundation has received many "great Wii ideas" to
assist other Homes in starting–up their programs.
Nintendo Wii makes a significant contribution to many of our residents quality of
care and quality of life!
