record turnout for summer conference
A
strong educational program and an ideal location resulted in an outstanding conference
success for the National Association of State Veterans Homes this summer! Overcoming the
challenges of the national economy, a record number of members, sponsors and family members
came to Asheville, North Carolina.
This event earned NASVH members 17 continuing education credits, needed for licensing requirements
in their states. Keynote speaker, Dr. William Thomas, "brought the house down" with
encouragement about the need for top–to–bottom change in improving services and in renewing
commitment to resident–centered care. Dr. Thomas’ pioneering work on the Eden Alternative
originated "culture change" in nursing care nearly twenty years ago.
Other dignitaries included U.S. Senator Richard Burr, Asheville Mayor Terry Belamy, Medal
of Honor Recipient Walter Marm, American Health Care Association Board Chairman Bernie
Dana and author Robert Abrams.
Family
members were treated to a special out–of–hotel events program, organized by the conference
host state, the North Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs. On the conference’s final
evening, attendess traveled to the Biltmore House, for a tour and dinner.
The Summer Conference is also NASVHs annual fundraiser. Fifty-six companies exhibited in
this year’s Trade Fair – with many offering additional sponsorship to support NASVHs annual
programs. Vendors are always invited to participate in all program activities, making the
Summer Conference a true long–term–care family event.
NASVH and the Veterans Homes Foundation are in partnership for operation of the Summer
Conference. The Foundation assists NASVH with educational program development, event planning
and fundraising.
