A recent Foundation survey, in cooperation with Vitel Reseach, Inc., found that a high
proportion of Veteran Home administrators were displeased with their work and had inadequate
job preparation for their current position.
In 2004, the Foundation developed a partnership with the National Association of State
Veterans Homes that, in part, addresses the growing needs of Home administrators for educational
programs. This includes the provision of instruction at NASVH annual meetings, in order
that administrators can earn continuing education credit needed each year to keep licenses
current in nursing home administration.
The AFVHF-NASVH partnership in education results in quality presentations on industry trends
and issues - and on management best practices - in order that busy administrators can perform
more effectively and efficiently at their job - and that the quality of life and quality
care for veteran residents may improve.
Leaders from both organizations plan education offerings and recruit nationally-recognized
speakers to provide quality take-home information to attendees of NASVH annual meetings.
In 2005, Home administrators earned up to 23.5 continuing education units (CEU's) by attending
educational sessions at the NASVH Mid-Winter Meeting and Summer Conference. The topics
of those sessions included:
- Medicaid Program Changes
- Leadership Models for the 21st Century
- Home Construction Workshop
- Federal Funding Update
- Grant Administration: Indirect Cost Recovery
- Nursing Workforce Culture Change
- Trends and Issues in Wound Care
- Listening to Our Front Line Care Givers
- On-Line Patient Medical Records
- VA Long Term Care Policy Briefing
- Risk Assessment and Management
- Career Development for Certified Nursing Assistants
- Overview of Patient-Record Privacy Regulations
- New Medicare Provisions to Help Your Residents
- Making Meal Time - Dining at Its Finest
